CATALOG # GRUG1
Spectacular old 31-1/2 inch by 62 inch Navajo Eye Dazzler, Germantown era sampler rug, circa 1880.
Red is the dominant color in this tightly-woven vintage Germantown rug. The influx of Germantown three- and four-ply yarn entered the Navajo weaving story in the 1880s. Its brilliant colors, and the Navajo weavers’ thirst for this color, added style to the sedate “Chief’s Patterns.” Germantown yarn gave birth to the “Eye Dazzler.” Extremely finely woven, the Three Ply Germantown was the first of several Germantown yarns the Navajo could obtain and are the rarest of all. In addition, since the yarn was so fine to work with and was relatively expensive to obtain, only the best weavers worked with the yarn. Consequently, relatively few were made, and most were destroyed through use, making these remaining examples particularly rare.
