FOSSILS, ROCKS & CRYSTALS FOR SALE

INTRODUCTION TO FOSSILS

Fort Tumbleweed has a huge inventory of Texas fossils. Fossils are traces of past life that include body fossils (actual remains of organisms) and trace fossils (indication of animal activity). Bones, teeth, and shells are examples of body fossils, while burrows, tracks, and footprints are examples of trace fossils.

Cretaceous Period Fossils

Most of our sealife fossils can be traced back to the Cretaceous Period (145.5 to 65.5 Million years ago). Cretaceous comes from the “Terrain Crétacé” established by d’Omalius d’Halloy in 1822 for the chalk [Latin creta] deposits of the Paris basin.

The Cretaceous Period ushered in flowering (Angiosperm) plants, marine life flourished, and many groups achieved their peak abundances and diversity.

This Period saw the emergence of huge land predators like the Tyrannosaurus Rex. Reptiles dominated the land (dinosaurs), the sea (mososaurs and the giant turtle, archelon) and the air (pterosaurs). The Cretaceous ended with a great extinction so severe it also marks the end of the Mesozoic Era. Dinosaurs, pterosaurs, mososaurs , ammonoids, and others, were among the groups that went extinct.

The Cretaceous Period saw a marked rise in sea levels, leading to vast shallow continental seas and huge deposits of chalk from the skeletal remains of marine organisms. Undersea volcanism and spreading-ridge formation enhanced middle-Late Cretaceous super-greenhouse conditions. The Cretaceous extinction event is correlates with a huge meteor impact on what is now the Yucatan peninsula. This impact is thought by many to have caused the demise of the Dinosaurs, as well as many other organisms at this time.

The fossil record shows a sequence of more and more complex organisms over time. One-celled organisms appeared before multi-celled organisms, plants before animals, and invertebrates before vertebrates. Among the vertebrates, fish appeared first, then amphibians, reptiles next, and finally mammals and birds.

The Jurassic Period (206 to 144 Million Years Ago)

During the Jurassic Period, giant plant-eating dinosaurs roaming the earth, feeding on huge growths of ferns and palm-like cycads and bennettitaleans. . . smaller but vicious carnivores stalking the great herbivores. . . oceans were full of fish, squid, and coiled ammonites, plus great ichthyosaurs and long-necked plesiosaurs. . . vertebrates were taking to the air, like the pterosaurs and the first birds. . . this was the Jurassic Period, beginning approximately 210 million years ago and lasting for 70 million years of the Mesozoic Era.

The Jurassic Period was named for the Jura Mountains on the border between France and Switzerland, where rocks of this age were first studied. With the popularity of the movie, "Jurassic Park", Jurassic became a household word.

Quaternary Period Mammals

Most of our Texas mamal fossils come from the Quaternary Period which is subdivided into the Pleistocene and Holocene. The Pleistocene or "Ice Age" includes the events from 1.8 million to about 10,000 years ago.

The Holocene (or Recent) includes the past 10,000 years. Vertebrate paleontologists designate the late Pleistocene (the past 250,000 years) in North America as the Rancholabrean Land Mammal Age.
